The question that this article will be tackling is why are most websites in existence all clamoring to get the best in search engine optimization? The key reason is obviously, to attract as much web traffic as possible to try and generate more online business, and therefore getting into the top few results positions of a search term is the key aim for every business that has a presence online.

In order to get their pages moved up in the rankings for their chosen keywords, a few sites stuff their pages with these keywords in the hope that the search engines will pick up on it and rank them higher. This is however, not considered to be ethical practice and if it is picked up on by the search engines, they will penalise the site by removing it completely from the search results.

When the web designers use rightful ways and means to climb up the search engine ranks ladder it is said that they have adopted white hat SEO techniques and the otherwise ones are referred to as black hat SEO techniques. When white hat techniques are made an integral part of web designing, getting indexed in the major search engines is no difficult task. Good techniques will give a longer life to the website and prove to be profitable in the long term, whereas the black hat SEO techniques though might prove to be good in the short term might be very dangerous when long term is considered.

SEO is an ever evolving field, and the standards set by the major search engines keep changing from time to time. Hence, it becomes important here to understand one thing clearly that search engine optimization is not a one-time solution.

Website owners and SEO operatives will have to be aware of what techniques the search engines are using to rank sites, and incorporate what they want to see into their own sites in order to be picked up and ranked by the search engines.
